About A TALE OF HALLOWEEN, PAST....AND PRESENT. How does one become obsessed enough with Halloween to dedicate months of time, hundreds of dollars and the better part of their home to the transformation? It all started over a pizza with friends. We love Halloween. They love Halloween. We've always wanted to do a haunted house ... so have they. And faster than you can say "trick or treat" the plan is hatched. Next thing you know, you're spending every available minute at their house, transforming the garage, driveway, front yard and living room into a walk-through haunted house. Fun for you, scares for everyone. From this initial haunt, the 1031 Club was born. Year two began in July, planning new ways to scare and delight friends and neighbors. After months of work, "Bad Dreams On Oleander" was in full howl by Halloween. It's here that our story moves north - 2,000 miles north, to be exact - to the Pacific Northwest. And while we're no longer there, photos and letters tell the story of how the 1031 Club haunt has grown and grown, with waiting lines now three hours long. Fast forward a few years later when we purchased the house we live in today. From the moment we laid eyes on the yard, we knew its destiny was that of the ultimate Halloween cemetery. It took several years to bring the dead and dying to life, but the dream has become a reality. For the past nine years (more or less), we have created a creepy crawly yard haunt that has attracted people from all over the Portland area. It has become a spectacle of specters that we are all quite proud of. But none of this would have happened had it not been for our good friends and family members who started us down this path, as well as the inspiration from fellow yard haunters throughout the country. From our family of freaks, fiends and the gratefully undead to yours, happy haunting. THE GHOSTS WITH THE MOST... Feel a chill as you're walking through the graveyard? Think you saw a shadow creep across the crypt as you drew near? Could be your mind playing tricks... or it could be one of our special ghosts lending a helping hand as you take this spirited journey. Here's our rogue's gallery of who's haunting who. Chris Davis Our fearless leader, artistic director and task master, as well as mistress of the web (electronic, not spider). The original cheerleader for haunting the yard (sorry, the undead don't carry pom-poms). Started the first yard haunt in 1997. When she's not busy making monsters, she collects frogs ... and passers-by. Jeff Davis Technical wizard. Online shopper. Resident builder of props. Takes care of anything that moves, needs to be built or goes bump in the night. Lighting director extraordinaire. Part of the original 1031 Club. Loves old Universal and Hammer monster movies, can you tell? Jen Ten If you paint it, they will come ... and paint it she does. Creepily, Scarily. Artistically. The tombstone queen of Halloween gives herself away with her black and gray paint-covered hands. Starting carving back in '97 and hasn't stopped since. Paints regular pictures when not painting for Halloween. Chris Reid Builder of monsters. Carver of foam. Shaper of all things evil and twisted. A kindred spirit with too much free time and the inability to say no. Crazy for crypts, a penchant for props, and a detail master when it comes to demons and such. A big gaming fan in the rest of the year. And a special thanks to everyone that lent us their support, their enthusiasm, their time ... and their spouse and/or dad. Dawn Reid * Lex Reid * Marianne Davis Special thanks to Wayne Davis, Jason King, Tony and Tina TenBarge, Nick and Marcy Brandt, Quinn Leach and Todd Duvall. Susan Lucke, Dean Paris, and Scott Campbell (aka Extremo the Clown). Bill and Sandy, Floyd and Marc, Cheryl and Roman, Matt and Lisa, Karen Jensen, Allen Nielson, Dan and Elyssa, Sue and Vern. |
